I’ve worked on my novel The Road Home since July of 2020. It took extra time because I had to learn how to write a novel and learn all the bits and pieces of publishing.
The process also took extra time because I had to untangle and put it back together when I decided to add a historical story to the book.
I hired an editor and proofreader. I had 12 readers helping me from the beginning and 40 readers on my launch team. And, oh, the typos we found.
I feel like I’ve lived in typo-land for the past several months.
I sent my files to the publishers and waited for the tracking number to tell me that my first copy was waiting for me on the porch. I hurried home and sat down with the first copy of my book, and I didn’t even take a picture of myself holding it.
Why? Because I immediately found typos. GRRRR (Insert my best Daniel Tiger Grr….).
I got a piece of paper and sat down to read and mark typos. I found 18 typos, and I wasn’t thrilled–my perfectionist self felt defeated.
I decided to fix them and move on instead of allowing my mistakes to ruin my day, and I did.
I asked in a writing group, and they said no one gets a book to print without something that needs a fix, so I breathed a sigh of relief.
But then, I sat down and opened my news app, and lo and behold, what did I see? The Queen’s jubilee merch had typos.
I guess if the Queen has typos, then I’m in good company.
