An Interview with Lillian Duncan~Turning Faith Into Fiction

I’m excited to share an author interview with you. Grab a warm mug of your favorite drink and settle in to meet author Lillian Duncan.

*When did you start writing?

I started writing in 1995 when I was 40. I’m 68 now. I didn’t have any idea of actually getting published when I first started. I just wrote for the joy of creating stories.

*How often do you write?

For many years, I took the advice to write every day.  I think writing every day is important. It keeps our creative juices flowing even when we aren’t thinking about the story as well as developing the habit of writing.

In 2012, I was diagnosed with bilateral brain tumors and a genetic disease (Neurofibromatosis Type 2) that turned my life upside down. I struggle with a variety of health issues these days but I still write at least four days a week but more often five or six days.

*Where do you write?

In my office at my computer. When we go camping, I take along my laptop and write if I need to.

*What has been the most challenging part of writing?

Marketing and promoting myself without a doubt. Like many writers, I’m an introvert. It feels unnatural to make myself the center of attention.  After my first book was published, I realized I had to put myself out there and speak and market my books or not bother to write them so I learned. It’s still not easy but I’m better than I used to be.

*The most rewarding?

It’s awesome when readers tell me that my stories impact their lives in some way. But I also love it when people tell me how much they enjoy my stories.

*What was your inspiration for this book?

SMALL TOWN SECRETS is based in the fictional town of Shady Valley, but does resemble my hometown of Shreve, Ohio. Except nothing this exciting happens in Shreve–which is a good thing. That’s why I like living there.

But nothing happening would make for a boring book so Shady Valley has a few secrets–secrets that could kill!

*What are your hobbies?

Reading, of course! I also enjoy camping with family and friends. My husband and I bowl on a league together. I’m really bad at it but have fun doing it anyway!

*What’s a cool fact about you?

At the moment we have two parrots that live with us. They are so much fun to talk and play with. One is an African Gray and he talks up a storm. The other is from the Amazon. He doesn’t talk as much but he’s such a sweetie. He tells me bye-bye about fifty times as we’re leaving the house.

About the book:

SMALL TOWN SECRETS—On the surface, Shady Valley looks like the ideal all-American place to live with beautiful flowering trees lining both sides of the street as you enter the picturesque town. Neighbors help neighbors. Doors are often left unlocked.
Serious crimes are practically nonexistent— almost but not quite!
But like all small towns, everyone knows everyone, which means everyone knows everyone’s business, and not everyone in Shady Valley is what they appear to be. Some have secrets— deadly secrets— that they hide behind the masks they wear.

When Angie McVey disappears on her wedding day, rookie officer Cami Martine is determined to find her best friend, but there are no leads to follow. Angie seems to have disappeared into thin air.
If Cami is to bring her best friend home, she will need to discover the deadly secrets of her friends and neighbors to find the one who wears the biggest mask.

About the Author: Lillian Duncan… turning faith into fiction.

For years, my tagline was Stories of faith mingled… with murder & mayhem, but no longer.

In 2012, I was diagnosed with bilateral brain tumors and a rare genetic disease (Neurofibromatosis Type 2). Because of that, I’ve changed and when a writer changes their writing changes. I wanted my tagline to reflect the new me.

I still love to write suspense and mystery but have spread my wings a bit to include other genres, including literary; women’s fiction; young adult; and devotionals. But not to worry, I still write the types of books I love to read—fast-paced stories that demonstrate God’s love for all of us with lots of action.
